# Currencies and Exchange Rates

Multiple currencies can be used in records, accounts, budgets, investments, and statistics. Accounts and records always keep their original currencies; exchange rates are used for cross-currency totals and display.

## Manage Currencies and Rates

Open **Currencies & Exchange Rates** to view or edit rates between currencies.

{% hint style="info" %}
Accounts and records keep their original currencies. Changing a rate only changes cross-currency conversion and totals; it does not rewrite original amounts.
{% endhint %}

## Display Rules

| Location                 | Display behavior                                              |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Account row | Shows the account's own currency and balance |
| Top of Assets | Converts and totals values in the current statistics currency |
| Parent-child accounts | Converts child accounts to the main account's currency first |
| Statistics and Budget | Uses the currency selected on that page |
| Currency exchange record | Preserves both outgoing and incoming amounts |

## Record a Currency Exchange

1. Choose **Currency Exchange** when adding a record.
2. Choose the source and destination accounts.
3. Enter both amounts or the rate used for this exchange.
4. Saving updates both account balances.

## Net Worth Conversion

The Assets page calculates assets, liabilities, and net worth for the current filter. Account rows, the top summary, and current net worth include only records that have occurred by the current time. Future records affect balances when their scheduled time arrives. The net worth trend reconstructs balances by record date and applies the book filter, account statistics settings, and exchange rate for each date.

{% hint style="warning" %}
If an account row and the page total differ, check the statistics currency, book filter, parent-child accounts, exchange rates, and whether the account is excluded from statistics.
{% endhint %}
